Celebrating Latine/x Heritage through Archaeology

Join us for the Honrando Nuestra Historia (Honoring Our History) series, a month-long celebration from September 15 to October 15. Partners across the state have joined this series of events to highlight the rich archaeological heritage and cultural contributions of the Latine/x communities in Florida. Experience the vital role of archaeology in preserving the diverse narratives of the longstanding Latin American and Caribbean communities, enriching our understanding of Florida’s history.

Purpose:

These events aim to connect archaeology with often overlooked communities, predominantly those from the global majority. We understand that the term Latinidad is multifaceted, and the experiences of the over 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries in the U.S. are diverse. In the U.S., Latinidad suggests that despite differences in nationality, race, gender, generation, language, immigrant status, and mobility, among other factors, Latines/xs are grouped under one overarching identity. However, it’s important to note that Latines/xs with the most privilege (those who are white, straight, cisgender, wealthy, and able-bodied, especially men) often receive the most attention. We acknowledge this issue and the absence of bilingual events catering to the predominantly Spanish-speaking and Latin American communities that have significantly influenced Florida’s identity and still reside here today. In our journey to comprehend the complexity of identifying as Latine/x or Hispanic in the U.S., we’re dedicating our efforts to organizing events that leverage language as a means of inclusivity. These events delve into and showcase diverse narratives that can be uncovered through the lenses of archaeology, history, and equal access to nature.
